DELF B2 practice test PDF: what it contains

A look at the test topics

The themes are the ones that come up session after session: environment, work, city life, culture and education. Here is what to expect.

  • Listening. A radio programme on a mobile repair workshop in a rural area, a debate on silent rooms in the workplace, then three short documents: high-school students collecting their neighbourhood's memories, the four-day week, and drinking fountains installed during heatwaves.
  • Reading. An article on opening school playgrounds to residents in summer, an article on passing on skills at work, and a forum on free museum entry on Sundays.
  • Writing. A formal letter to the mayor, on behalf of your neighbourhood's residents, about a plan to turn part of the central square into a car park.
  • Speaking. Two topics to choose from: delivery platforms in cities, and the use of artificial intelligence at school.

Every document is original, written for practice: you will not have seen it anywhere else, which makes your score more reliable.

Why a PDF in the new format

Many DELF B2 PDFs in circulation date from before the reform. The format changed for listening and reading: open questions disappeared, replaced by multiple choice, and the listening paper now has three exercises. Old papers are still useful for writing and speaking, but they skew your preparation for comprehension.

The test in this DELF B2 practice test PDF follows the current format: the same document types, the same number of exercises and the same marking out of 100. You can trust your score to estimate your level.

DELF B2 practice test PDF: the fox takes the printed test with a stopwatch

How to use it under exam conditions

  1. Print the PDF and set the answer key aside without looking at it.
  2. Take the three group papers back to back, as on exam day: 30 minutes of listening, 1 hour of reading, 1 hour of writing, no dictionary.
  3. For listening, open each audio link at the start of the exercise and respect the number of plays shown: twice for long documents, once for short ones.
  4. For speaking, pick a topic, prepare it for 30 minutes, then record yourself for 5 to 7 minutes.
  5. Then mark yourself with the answer key, paper by paper.

On the practical side, print in black and white, double-sided if you can: the document runs to 24 pages, including a lined page for the writing paper. If you do not have a printer, work on two screens, with the test on one and a sheet of scrap paper beside you, or take the test online directly. Have a stopwatch ready, headphones for the audio and a quiet place where nobody will interrupt you for the two and a half hours of the group papers. Treat it like the real exam: phone in another room, no dictionary, and no pausing the audio. The closer your conditions are to the real exam day, the more your final score will tell you.

How to work out your score

For listening and reading, add up the points of your correct answers: each paper is marked out of 25. For writing and speaking, the mark depends on a criteria grid. Compare your text with what the marker expects (given in the answer key), then with our marked writing sample, which scores two essays criterion by criterion.

To pass the DELF B2 you need at least 50 out of 100, and at least 5 out of 25 in every paper. If you score well above 60, you are in a good position for the exam. Our post on a good DELF B2 score explains how to read your result.

What to do depending on your score per paper

Score out of 25What it meansYour priority
Under 10At-risk paper: the eliminating mark of 5 is not far awayRevisit the method for that paper before another test
10 to 14Close to B2, still fragileAnalyse every mistake and work on recurring traps
15 to 19Solid B2 levelKeep it up with a full test every two weeks
20 and aboveVery good levelSave time and aim for consistency

Look above all at the balance between papers: a very high reading score only makes up for a very low speaking score if the latter stays above 5 out of 25. A weak paper is therefore the priority for your coming weeks.

Who this test is for

This test suits every candidate for the DELF B2 for adults: students preparing for university entry, adults who need B2 for French citizenship, professionals who want to showcase their French. If you are still unsure of your level, start with our shorter free B2 level test, then take this full test for a precise measure.

Marking each paper methodically

Do not just count your points. For each comprehension mistake, reread the explanation in the key, then find the passage in the text or transcript that gave the answer. You will quickly see whether you keep falling into the same traps: paraphrases, exaggerations, mixing up different points of view.

Our worked examples cover these traps paper by paper: listening with real audio, reading and speaking topics.

A two-week plan with this PDF

DayWhat you do
Day 1The three group papers in real time, in one sitting
Day 2Mark listening and reading: reread every mistake with the transcript or the text
Day 3Mark your letter against the marker's expectations, then rewrite it
Day 4Speaking: one topic prepared in 30 minutes and recorded
Days 5 to 10Targeted work on your weakest paper, with our worked examples
Days 11 to 13Second speaking topic, replay the audio without the transcript
Day 14A new full test online to measure your progress

Mistakes to avoid when practising with a PDF

  • Looking at the answers too early. An answer seen before you have searched teaches you nothing and inflates your score.
  • Replaying without limit. On exam day you get one or two plays: respect that from the start.
  • Skipping the writing paper. It takes longest to mark, but it is where method brings the fastest progress.
  • Not recording your speaking. Preparing a topic in your head does not replace five minutes of real speech.
  • Retaking the same test straight away. You would remember the answers. Wait a few weeks before redoing it.

Official sample papers from France Éducation international

France Éducation international, the body that runs the diploma, publishes official DELF B2 sample papers with their answers on its website. They are the best reference for the exact format. Our test complements them: more documents to practise with, and detailed explanations for every reading question.

Be wary, however, of sites offering free downloads of whole textbooks as PDFs. These copies are illegal, often outdated and sometimes harmful to your computer. If you want a book, our comparison of the best DELF B2 books will help you choose.

After this test: more practice with answers

One test is not enough to prepare well. To progress, take a full mock exam every one or two weeks and analyse your mistakes in between. On our site, tests n°2 to 6 follow the same format, with audio, a timer and a score out of 100 calculated automatically. Our DELF B2 sample papers post presents all six tests, and our 8-week study plan tells you when to take them.

In short

This DELF B2 practice test PDF gives you a full new-format test, with answers, explanations and transcripts, free and without signing up. Print it, take it in real time, mark it methodically, then move on to the other tests. It is the simplest way to turn practice into real progress.
