The exam

What is the DELF B2?

The DELF B2 (Diplôme d'études en langue française, CEFR level B2) is an official French diploma awarded by France Education international — formerly CIEP — on behalf of the French Ministry of Education. It certifies an upper-intermediate level: you understand the main ideas of complex texts, argue in writing and speaking, and interact with ease.

Between the DELF B1 and the DALF C1, it is valid for life. It comes in tout public (adult), junior and scolaire (for teenagers) and Pro versions: the papers have the same structure, only the topics change.

FAQ

DELF B2 frequently asked questions

What is the DELF B2?

The DELF B2 is an official French diploma (CEFR level B2) awarded by France Education international, formerly CIEP. The exam tests four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

How does the DELF B2 exam work?

The group papers (listening 30 min, reading 1 h, writing 1 h) are taken on the same day. The speaking test (20 min, after 30 min of preparation) is an individual interview with an examiner.

What score do I need to pass the DELF B2?

At least 50/100 overall, with a minimum of 5/25 in each of the four papers. Scoring below 5/25 in any paper means you fail.

What changed with the new format?

Listening and reading are now assessed only with multiple-choice questions, in three exercises each. The writing and speaking papers keep their structure.

What is the difference between DELF B2 tout public, junior and scolaire?

The diploma and format are identical. The junior version (and scolaire, through schools) is for teenagers, with suitable topics; tout public is for adults.

How do I pass the DELF B2 writing paper?

Write the type of text requested, go beyond 250 words, structure your arguments with linking words and use the right register. Practise under time limits and have your work marked with the official grid.

Where can I take the DELF B2 and how much does it cost?

You take it at an approved centre: an Institut français, an Alliance Française or another centre recognised by France Education international. Each centre sets its dates and fees, which vary by country.

Does the diploma expire?

No. Unlike the TCF or TEF, it is a permanent diploma that never expires.

How long does it take to prepare?

It depends on your starting level. The free placement test estimates your level and suggests a plan that fits your exam date.

Are you affiliated with France Education international?

No. We are an independent, unofficial preparation service, not affiliated with France Education international or the Alliance Française network.
