How the DELF B2 is marked, the pass mark, what counts as a good DELF B2 score and where to gain points easily in each paper.
By Équipe DELF B2 · · 8 min read

Everyone asks the same questions about a good DELF B2 score: how much do you need to pass, what is an elimination mark, and when does a score count as good? This guide explains the official marking, gives you score bands to interpret your result and shows where to gain points in each paper.
For the full exam overview, see also our DELF B2 exam guide.
The exam has four papers, each marked out of 25:
| Paper | Length | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | 30 minutes | 25 |
| Reading | 1 hour | 25 |
| Writing | 1 hour | 25 |
| Speaking | 20 minutes (+ 30 min preparation) | 25 |
| Total | 100 |
Listening and reading are multiple choice, marked objectively. Writing and speaking are assessed with criteria grids: task completion, coherence, vocabulary, grammar and, in speaking, pronunciation and interaction.
Two conditions must both be met:
A mark below 5/25 is an elimination mark. A candidate who scores 22, 22, 4 and 20, that is 68/100, fails because of the third paper. That is why no paper can be neglected.
There is no official grade such as "merit" or "distinction". You pass or you don't. But your certificate shows your score out of 100, and it can matter for an application. Here are our bands to interpret it:
| Score out of 100 | What it shows |
|---|---|
| 50 to 59 | B2 reached narrowly: a pass, but fragile. |
| 60 to 69 | A solid B2, independent in most situations. |
| 70 to 79 | A very good B2, comfortable in writing and speaking. |
| 80 and above | A level approaching C1: consider the DALF C1. |
These bands are a guide. If a university or employer asks for a minimum score, their requirement is what counts: check it before you register.

Read the questions before each listening and spot the key words. On the first listening, answer the easy questions; on the second, check the others. Never leave a question blank: a guess is better than nothing.
Manage your time: about 25 minutes per text. Identify the author's thesis and arguments before answering. Distractors often reuse words from the text with a different meaning.
Respect the text type and the recipient: it is the first criterion on the grid. Write at least 250 words, use paragraphs and vary your linking words. Our guides to the formal letter and the article detail the expected structure.
State the key question clearly, announce your plan and back each argument with an example. During the debate, add nuance and defend your position. Our DELF B2 speaking phrases help you structure your talk.
Your centre releases results a few weeks after the session, often between 4 and 8 weeks. You receive a certificate of achievement with your score, then the official diploma. The DELF B2 is valid for life.
If you fail, you can register for another session. First analyse your marks per paper: they show exactly where to improve.
| Candidate | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking | Total | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amina | 15 | 17 | 12 | 14 | 58/100 | Pass |
| Lucas | 21 | 20 | 4.5 | 18 | 63.5/100 | Fail (elimination mark) |
| Sofia | 19 | 18 | 17 | 19 | 73/100 | Pass, a very good B2 |
Lucas's case shows why a good DELF B2 score also depends on your weakest paper: a comfortable total cannot make up for a mark below 5/25.
The writing and speaking papers are assessed with official grids. Each criterion gets a mark, then the total is brought back to 25.
In the speaking test, two examiners assess you together. The best way to gain points is to know these criteria before the exam.
If you passed, keep your certificate safe: you will need it for applications until the diploma arrives. If you are applying to a university, send it with your file.
If you failed, look at your marks per paper first. A single weak paper means a few weeks of targeted work. For any question about your mark, contact your exam centre: it will tell you what is possible.
With a DELF B2 score above 80/100, the DALF C1 becomes a realistic goal. Some demanding programmes and employers ask for it. Prepare for it only after passing the B2: the papers are longer and require real ease in writing and speaking.
Ten points out of 100 is often the difference between failing and passing. They are rarely found in a single paper. Here is where to look:
These gains don't require better French: they come from method. That is why a month of targeted preparation often clearly raises a DELF B2 score.
Stress costs points, especially in listening and speaking. A few habits help: sleep well the night before, arrive early, breathe slowly before each paper and don't discuss answers with other candidates between papers. In the speaking test, if you lose your thread, use a phrase to buy time: « Laissez-moi réfléchir un instant. »
The certificate usually shows your total out of 100 and the breakdown per paper. Read it as a report: a paper clearly lower than the others shows what to work on for your next diploma or your studies. Keep it safe, as it serves as proof until the diploma arrives.
For most purposes, only having the diploma matters. But a good score reassures an admissions panel or an employer, and it tells you whether the DALF C1 is within reach. Whatever your score, keep practising: the level fades quickly without use.
The TCF and TEF give a level on the CEFR scale rather than a pass or fail, and their results are usually valid for two years. The DELF B2 is a diploma: once passed, it never expires. If you need lasting proof of your level, a good DELF B2 score is the more durable choice.
Two letters on the same topic can earn very different marks. A letter around 12/25 often follows the task but stays general: arguments without examples, repetitive linking words, a few agreement errors and an approximate closing formula.
A letter around 18/25 stands out with arguments backed by precise examples, a well-placed concession, a concrete proposal, varied vocabulary and correct complex sentences. The difference is not talent but method: a plan, examples and proofreading.
These five habits require no progress in French, but they protect your score from needless losses.
| Goal | What usually matters |
|---|---|
| French citizenship | Holding the B2 diploma; the exact score rarely matters. |
| University entry | Holding B2; some programmes look at the score or ask for C1. |
| Employment | The diploma reassures; a good score strengthens your application. |
Always check the exact requirements of the organisation concerned: they can vary from one institution to another.
Once you have the diploma, use your momentum. Keep reading and listening to French every day, and set yourself a new goal: an advanced course, a work project or the DALF C1. Your level grows stronger through practice, far more than through revision. A short daily habit keeps the progress you made while preparing. Reading one article or listening to one podcast a day is enough to keep your French active, and it makes the step to C1 much easier when you decide to take it. Your future self will thank you for keeping the habit going.
The best way to know your likely score is to take a full mock exam under real conditions. Our DELF B2 tests give a score out of 25 per paper and a total out of 100, with the same pass rules. Start with the free B2 level test, then take our DELF B2 sample papers. Official samples are also available on the France Education international website. A good DELF B2 score comes from practice under exam conditions.
50/100 overall, with at least 5/25 in each of the four papers. A mark below 5/25 eliminates you, even if your total reaches 50.
There is no official grade. As a guide, above 70/100 shows a solid B2, and above 80/100 a level approaching C1.
Your certificate of achievement shows your score out of 100 and the breakdown per paper. Some programmes may ask for a minimum: check their requirements.
Yes, you can register for another session. A passed DELF B2 remains valid for life.
